A:It can, if it is done carelessly. Cutting through structural roots kills mature trees slowly enough that most people never link the two events. We route around root plates where the design allows and pull pipe through rather than open cutting where it does not. If a run genuinely cannot avoid a significant root zone, we will tell you before we start and offer an alternative layout instead of proceeding quietly.
Q: Fairfax County sent me a backflow notice. What do I need to do?
A:Book a test with a certified tester who is on the county’s authorized vendor list, which we are. We test the assembly, complete the report and submit it to Fairfax County under your property record. If the assembly fails we will show you the options for repair or replacement, and replacement work needs a plumbing permit and final inspection that we handle. Leaving it unresolved is what leads to a disconnection notice, so it is worth clearing.
Q: My system is over twenty years old. Repair it or replace it?
A:Usually repair, at least at first. Buried PVC often outlives the parts attached to it, so if the mainline holds pressure the sensible order is to replace heads and nozzles, fix the valves, upgrade the controller and re-zone the areas that are mismatched. That gets most of the benefit at a fraction of the cost. Full replacement makes sense when the pipe itself is failing in several places or the original layout cannot cover the property no matter what is bolted onto it.
Q: Half of my lawn is in shade now. Can the system account for that?
A:Only if the shaded and sunny areas are on separate zones, and on older systems they usually are not. Splitting them is a straightforward retrofit and it solves two problems at once: the shaded turf stops sitting wet and growing fungus, and the sunny turf stops browning because the schedule was being held back to protect the shade.
Q: Does an irrigation system have to be registered in Fairfax County?
